Ryan Murphy's true-crime anthology series returns for a sophomore season with The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. FX's nine-part season explores the 1997 murder of 50-year-old renowned fashion designer Gianni Versace on the steps of his Miami Beach home.

The series, based on Maureen Orth's book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History features a star-studded cast and plenty of drama. Édgar Ramírez and Penélope Cruz star as fashion designer siblings Gianni and Donatella Versace, while Glee's Darren Criss portrays Andrew Cunanan, the spree killer who murdered at least five people, including Versace, before taking his own life.

What makes Murphy's series even more intriguing is that many of the characters are based on real people. Here's how the cast of The Assassination of Gianni Versace compares to their real-life counterparts.
